What is the Kohima Epitaph and what has it got to do with Britain’s forgotten battle that changed the Second World War?
Well, those of you living in the UK and who attend Remembrance Sunday services will probably know the words even if you don’t know the story behind them:
“When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, We gave our today.”
The memorial which bears those powerful words, stands in a cemetery containing the graves over over 1,400 British servicemen and memorials to over 900 Indian troops who died alongside them.
They died in one of the bloodiest, toughest, grimmest battles of the Second World War.
A battle sometimes called the “Stalingrad of the East.”
Outnumbered 6:1 and half of whom were from non-combat units, the multi-national British garrison stood their ground in bloody hand-to-hand fighting, refusing to retreat or surrender for two weeks until relieved. And even then the battle continued for another vicious month.
That stand stopped the Japanese invasion of India in its tracks and turned the tide of the war in South East Asia.
Both for its ferocity and its turning point in the war, it has been called: “Britain’s greatest battle.”
The Japanese lost 53,000 men from their army of 85,000.
The British (14th Army) lost 4,000 men killed and wounded.
This forgotten victory was made possible by General William (Bill) Slim commanding the 14th Army.
Rather like the battle and the 14th Army, General Slim has not received the recognition that he is due.
And yet, it is almost completely forgotten.
Rather like the army that fought against the Japanese in Burma.
So, as we near Remembrance Sunday, I think it is time to reveal the story of the Battle of Kohima in 1944.

My name is Chris Green and I love to share stories from British history. Not just because they are interesting but because, good or bad, they have shaped the world we live in today.
History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.
My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"
Just for the record, I do have a history degree in Medieval & Modern history from the University of Birmingham.

Faith and Fear - Pakistan's COVID-19 Response
In 2017, I envisioned a song that has now come to life as part of my ongoing worship project. The song, titled "No Turning Back," is the second release from this project and carries a heartfelt message intended to resonate with the church community and beyond.
Inspired by the traditional worship song "I Have Decided," "No Turning Back" is a straightforward composition designed to encourage and support individuals in their commitment to Christ. It is my sincere hope that this song will touch many hearts and provide spiritual encouragement.

LYRICS
He said “take my yoke and follow me”
For I am gentle and humble in heart
And you will find rest for your souls in me
My yoke is easy, my burden is light
Though none go with me still I will follow
The world behind me & the cross before me
I have decided and I am not turning back
I will follow, I will follow
I have decided to follow Jesus
No turning back
Though none go with me still I will follow
The world behind me & the cross before me
I have decided and I am not turning back
I will follow, I will follow
You gave your life and took my place on that cross
Though the world forsake me
you re always there
You are the only one i can lean on
Jesus you re always there for me

Iran is eating into the patience of USA and Israel.
Student union elections in several institutions across Arunachal Pradesh have increasingly become large-scale events, often marked by concerts, parties, and daily lunch or dinner programmes during the campaign period. While such activities generate excitement and participation among students, they have also led to discussions about the growing amount of money being spent during campus elections.
At the same time, concerns continue to surface regarding the condition of some government educational institutions. In a few colleges, students have raised issues about inadequate food supply in hostels, damaged infrastructure, and poorly maintained washrooms. These concerns highlight the need for greater attention towards improving basic facilities that directly affect the daily lives and well-being of students.
The rising cost of student election campaigns also raises an important question about inclusivity in leadership. When elections involve significant expenditure, aspiring leaders who may have strong motivation, sincere intentions, and a genuine commitment to address student grievances may find it difficult to compete without financial backing.
Another concern being discussed is about priorities after the election. If a candidate spends substantial resources during the campaign—organizing concerts, parties, and other events—questions may arise about what their primary focus will be after getting elected. Would the priority remain on serving the student community and addressing institutional issues, or could there be pressure to recover the money spent during the campaign? If attempts are made to recover such expenses, observers wonder how this might affect transparency, fairness, and the overall purpose of student leadership.
As student politics plays an important role in shaping future leaders, many believe that elections centered on ideas, accountability, and service—rather than financial power—can help create a more inclusive and meaningful democratic culture within campuses.
As Arunachal Pradesh gears up for the grand Dree Festival celebrations tomorrow, the Apatani Heritage Tower (AHT) — a rising cultural landmark dedicated to the Apatani community of Ziro Valley — has been temporarily opened to the public at the Dree Ground, Capital Complex in Itanagar.
